Chapter 12

Tyler

Linda looked good enough to eat. Tyler had to keep reigning his thoughts in because if he didn’t stop fixating on that, he was going to do something stupid, like hit on her for real, and that would ruin the whole damn evening.

And he wasn’t even close to prepared for the night to be over yet.

That red dress, though. It took all his self-control to keep his eyes from wandering all over the places the red silk covered… and the places it didn’t. He knew Linda was beautiful, of course. He saw her almost every day. She dressed in tasteful and attractive clothing. But this was something else entirely.

What did it mean?

He couldn’t stop fixating on that question. Did it have to mean anything? Maybe the woman just wanted to look spicy. And Lord, was she succeeding. But maybe, just maybe, she dressed up for him. It was impossible to know without asking her directly, but it was tantalizing to speculate that she had put that dress on simply for the purpose of driving him insane. He wanted to tell her—no, show her—just how well it was working.

But he was going to behave himself. The last thing he wanted to do was something that was going to mess things up for him. For them. And even if she never gave him the time of day beyond their professional relationship, he was going to take this opportunity to enjoy the hell out of spending time with her.

The thing about Linda, too, was that he didn’t feel the need to impress her. And only as he sat there and looked into her sea-green eyes did he realize that, deep down, he always had a need to prove himself to anyone and everyone. Prove that he was the best hockey player. The best lover. The best fighter. The best man. But Linda was different. By the very nature of their circumstances, he had been forced to be vulnerable with her from the beginning. It was a relief to not have to posture and pretend.

“One more day of Blissmas,” Linda said, smiling.

“A most successful campaign,” said Tyler. “You’re really something else, you know that?”

It was hard to tell in the candlelight, but he thought he saw her blush.

“I just do my job,” she said.

“That’s the key, isn’t it?” he said, leaning back against the tufted backing of the booth. “Forget all the bullshit. Forget the ego. Just do the work.”

Linda shrugged and smiled. “I try.”

“I’m really lucky,” said Tyler. “Really lucky that Roger found you.”

“Well, I found Roger,” said Linda.

“Oh, did you?” Tyler said. Come to think of it, he hadn’t asked how Linda had even come into his orbit. He had always assumed that Roger had gone out and found her.

“My dad is a big Royals fan,” she said. “We used to have season tickets when I was a kid. So obviously he was following what was happening and he mentioned it to me.”

“Ah, jeez,” said Tyler, grimacing. “He’s probably not too happy with me.
